When the handheld is 'on the road', a wide variety of modems can be used for hotsyncing between the PC and handheld.
 


Palm Modem

The Palm Connectivity Kit from PalmOne ($99) is a 56k modem that attaches to the handheld using the Palm Universal Connector. The modem is powered by 2 AAA batteries (included) or an AC adapter (sold separately).


External Bluetooth Modem
This $149 external bluetooth 56k modem (model CM7100-510) from Socket Communications enables a wireless modem connection with a bluetooth handheld such as a Tungsten.


Cell Phone Modem
A Cingular or T-Mobile cellular phone can be often used as the 'modem' for a handheld unit by purchasing a cable (or using bluetooth) to connect the cell phone to the handheld. (Note: this requires a cell phone is compatible with your handheld!)



Modem Charging Cradle
Several manufacturers make modems utilizing the Palm Universal Connector, including this combination 56k modem and charging cradle available for $179 from Igo.


External Bluetooth Modem
Inexpensive external modems are available with a variety of connectivity options. For example, the Zoom 4300 modem ($80) contains both wireless bluetooth and serial cable connections.



External Modem
Just about any PC external modem can be used, including those that are have been used for other purposes at your company. Most older external modems use a 9 pin serial connection.

 
 
Unattended Hotsync

Modem hotsyncs between the ALO software on the PC and handhelds can occur one after the other in 'Unattended Mode' with no PC Operator intervention.  Remote salespersons can call in and upload their orders and receive any downloaded updates on a daily basis.

PC Network Hotsync

Palm Hotsync can be be configured so that a handheld can be physically connected to one PC, but hotsync to another PC.  For example, a handheld can be connected to a PC in a remote office which connects through the network and hotsyncs with the headquarters PC where ALO Information Manager is located.
